A bride by a sunlit window on her wedding morning, reading on her phone

Four questions to start from

  1. 1Tell me about your daughter and the person she’s marrying. How they met, what they’re like together, anything.
  2. 2When did you know your daughter had found the right person?A moment rather than a summary.
  3. 3What have you learned about staying together? You don’t have to have it worked out.
  4. 4What do you want to say to both of them?Stop when you’re ready.

A sample letter

Lucy,

I wrote this months ago, so I’ve no idea what the weather’s doing out your window.

The first time you brought Dan home he fixed the back gate. Nobody asked him. He saw it hanging off, found the screwdriver in the drawer without asking where it was, and went and did it. I thought, he pays attention. That’s most of it.

Your dad and I have had thirty-one years and maybe four arguments worth keeping. The rest were about the thermostat. Let the small ones go. Say sorry first, even when you’re right. Especially then.

Go and dance. Your dad’s been practicing in the kitchen.
